EXAMPLES OF CARPETS FROM EAST TURKISTAN

East Turkistan lies north of Tibet, South East of Mongolia, in the great Tarim river basin, with an area of 1,175,000 square miles. It is sparsely populated with Eastern Turks, Kazak and Kirghiz tribes as well as some Mongols and Chinese. Fragments of woven carpets from this region are dated at least as early as 3rd century A.D. Presently, this region is under Chinese occupation.
