WALNUT (JUGLANS REGIA)

The old Turkic word for walnuts was yagak. Later, along with the Arab and Persian influence, the word ceviz entered the Turkish language, and remains current today. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, walnuts were raised in great quantity in the area of Kashgar, in what is now Xinjiang, China. It was even mentioned in a literary work, in the poetry of Kashgarlı’s Divan.
