Art Profile :

Hale Arpacıoğlu was born in Izmir in 1952. She studied painting in the Academy of BRERA in Milan and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome in 1977. She has had 15 solo shows in Istanbul, Vienna, Paris, Teheran, Tashkent and Ankara and participated in Istanbul Biennials. Her early paintings of the mid 1980′s-90s were portraits and nudes with intense saturated colors depicting feminine figures set in an exotic vegetative environment that reflected an animal sexuality. Many of these paintings were exhibited in solo shows in Istanbul, Ankara, Vienna and Paris.

From 1990 to 1995, symbols such as the cross and black green red eggs appeared in the series, Body and Soul and Inner Portraits. In 1999, Arpacıoğlu went to Rome once again where she lived and worked for almost a decade until 2008. Her sojourn in Rome was accompanied with scholarly studies and research in mythology, ontology, depth psychology, eastern philosophy and mysticism. During those years, changes in her understanding and experience brought about new linguistic solutions and style. Plexi-glass boxes and paper cuts had now become the new medium of expression for her.

In 2005 and 2006, Arpacıoğlu had major solo shows in eastern capitals such as Tashkent and Teheran, where she had the chance to visit the richest archeological and historical sites she ever encountered. She has presented her work at many significant exhibitions including her participation in the Vienna Art Festival in 1986, and the Istanbul Biennal twice, first in 1987 and then in 1999. In 2010, Arpacıoğlu was chosen as one of the 50 Women Artists with Golden Signatures, a project of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in Turkey. She was also part of Truth and Reality, an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul Modern held within the context of the Istanbul Biennial of 2012. In 2012, she went back to painting and started her new series called the “Visual Art of Poetic Philosophy” due to the works′ poetic manner of expression. The pieces in this series are open to multiple interpretations. Arpacıoğlu has settled down in New York City, where she presently lives and works.
