İsmail Gülgeç was born in Gaziantep in 1947. He began working in Yeni Asır newspaper in Izmir in 1965. His first caricature was published in the newspaper, Yeni İzmir in 1968. He then drew caricatures for several newspapers such as Demokrat İzmir, Ege Ekspres, Milliyet and Devir magazine; his caricature “Ormangiller” in the magazine Milliyet Çocuk became very popular. He also drew caricatures for the Milliyet’s weekly additional comic paper “Kirpi”. A story with his illustration “İnce memed”, which was published with Yaşar Kemal’s works, was also published in abroad in 1979. Gülgeç drew Ahmet Ümit’s book “Başkomser Nevzat / Çiçekçinin Ölümü” as a cartoon. He also drew 12 caricatures for 12 songs in Nazan Öncel’s album “7’n Bitirdin”. Gülgeç served as a chairman in the Caricaturist Association in 1988, 1989 and 1991.
