Tevfik Kalp was born in Kastamonu in 1973. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University in 1997. He then completed master′s degree in the Department of Traditional Turkish Handicrafts at Marmara University. Kalp started learning calligraphy from Musa Özdağ and Rafet Küllüoğlu when he was a high school student. In 1992 he began learning sülüs and nesih scripts from the prominent master Hasan Çelebi, and received his professional license in those scripts in 1996. While studying at Marmara University, Kalp learned rik′a script from Prof. Dr. Muhittin Serin. He has received a lot of support from famous calligraphers such as Prof. Dr. Hüsrev Subaşı, Mehmet Özçay, Davut Bektaş, Osman Özçay, Efdalüddin Kılıç, Ali Toy, Mehmet Memiş, Savaş Çevik, and Sadri Sayıoğulları. Kalp has participated in many national and international exhibitions and competitions. He won second place in the international calligraphy competition, which was held in Kuwait in 1997. In 1998 he received an encouragement award in the International Şeyh Hamdullah Calligraphy Competition, which was organized by IRCICA. Kalp currently teaches calligraphy at ISMEK class, belongs to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and the Kubbealt Culture and Art Foundation.
