Ömer Faruk Dere was born in Istanbul in 1973. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University in 1997. He completed his master’s degree in Turkish-Islamic Arts at his alma mater in 2001. He started learning marbling art from Hikmet Barutçugil in 1996. In the same year, he learned calligraphy, especially sülüs and nesih scripts from Mehmet Özçay. He also learned calligraphy art from Savaş Çelik and Prof. M. Uğur Derman. Besides making marblings and calligraphies, Dere works on paper polish and dyeing, and restorations. He has served as an expert in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum and the Haluk Perk Museum. Since 2004, Dere has taught marbling and calligraphy at the ISMEK. In addition, he teaches marbling as a part of rehabilitation for handicapped people and prisoners. He has participated in many national and international ebru congresses and exhibitions. His works can be seen in many private collections in Turkey and abroad. Dere published two books: “Ebrû Sanatı” (Istanbul: İSMEK, 2007) and “Hattat Hafiz Osman Efendi” (Istanbul: Korpus publications, 2010).
