Selçuk Akyol was born in Izmir in 1978. He started studying music with his father Ali Rıza Akyol, and graduated from the Oboe Department of Dokuz Eylül University State Conservatory in 2000. He pursued his master′s degree with Prof. Taşkın Oray at Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, and completed with the degree "Auszeichnung" in 2006. While studying in Düsseldorf, he performed with Düsseldorf Symphoniker, Krefelder Kammer Orchester, Bayer Orchester-Krefeld, and Notabu Ensemble Düsseldorf. Within the organization of "Deutsche-Russiche Kultubegegnung", he joined the Russian Tour of the Schumann-Camerata Orchestra, of which he is a Founding member, and went to Moscow, Nijhi Nowgorod, Kazan, and Wolgograd in 2004. In the same year, Akyol participated in the Schmoiz Bickenbach, Düsseldorf Chamber Music Competition with the Neuma Quintet, and received the first prize. He performed a concert in Nord Rhein Westfallen. In 2006, he participated in a festival, that was organized to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Akyol has performed as a soloist with many orchestras such as the Izmir State Symphony Orchestra, the Başkent Chamber Orchestra, and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, he completed his doctoral degree, Proficiency in Art at the Institute of Music and Stage Arts of Bilkent University. Since 2007, Akyol has performed as the first oboist in the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, and served as a lecturer at his alma mater. He is a member of the Bilkent Ensemble of Wind Instruments and Neuma Quintet.
