Mehmet Güntekin was born in Bafra in 1963. After finishing Bafra Central Primary School and Bafra Cumhuriyet Middle School, he went to Bafra High School and Kabataş High School for boys in Istanbul. With the encouragement of his father, he started learning music at the Bafra Musiki Cemiyeti. He learned repertoire from Mahmut Koçbay and kanun from Ahmet Sedat Mete. He was a student of Süheylâ Altmışdört and Fatih Salgar. During his education in the Department of Public Administration of the Faculty of Political Science at Istanbul University, Güntekin participated in the University’s Choir. He served as chair and Chorus Master in the University Choir in 1982, and conducted several concerts. In 1983, he continued his music study at Turkish Music Nazariyatı Department of the Istanbul Municipality Conservatory. Between 1988 and 1992, he taught repertoire and solfege classes at Kubbealtı Academy Foundation, Music Department. At the same time, he also directed the Choir of the Faculty of Economics at Marmara University. From 1991 to 1998, Güntekin was the Chorus Master of the Bakırköy Musiki Association. He sometimes participated in the ceremonies of Şeb-i Arûs as an âyin-han, who sang religious songs and poems, in Konya. In 1985, he passed the examination and became a member of Izmir State Classical Turkish Music Choir, though he resigned without starting. As a professional musician, Güntekin began serving in the Istanbul State Classical Turkish Music Choir in 1986, which was directed by Nevzad Atlığ. He also served as an editor for a weekly music supplement in Yeni Ufuk newspaper and for musical pages in Tercüman newspaper. His articles were published in magazines such as Türk Edebiyatı, Yeni Düşünce, Dergâh, Boom Müzik, Istanbul Encyclopedia, Music Makers in Turkey, Ottoman Encyclopedia and Osmanlı (vol. 10). Güntekin published the book “Necdet Yaşar ve Nevzad Atlığ” as well. He was the general editor of Musiki Mecmuası.

Güntekin also prepared documentary programs for TV such as “İrfan Meclisi” (Samanyolu TV), “Dergâh ve İftar Saati” (Kanal 7) and “Yine Bir Gülnihâl” (Kanal 7). He is one of the founders of Istanbul Fasıl Ensemble, Istanbullu Kadınlar Ensemble and Istanbul Tasavvul Musilisi Ensemble, and went to Morocco, Bosnia, Croatia, France, Germany and Spain to give concerts with them. In addition, he participated in the concerts with the State Classical Turkish Music Choir or the Yine Bir Gülnihâl Ensemble in Turkey and abroad including North Cyprus and Tunis. He recorded 7 plaques and 7 cassettes in the name of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality with their ensembles. In the 150th anniversary of Dede Efendi′s death, Güntekin directed orchestra and chorus. In addition, he organized and directed numerous recitals and concerts for 10 years in Turkey. With the Necdet Yaşar Ensemble, Güntekin participated in the concert, which was given in the Versailles Palace in Paris on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire.

As well as being a soloist of the State Classic Turkish Music Choir, Gültekin organizes music activities for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality including “Fasıl Akşamı” (with Istanbul Fasıl Ensemble),  “Hâtıralarla Türk Müziğinin Yakın Tarihi” (with Rüşdü Eriç, Nevzad Atlığ, Alâeddin Yavaşca, Necdet Yaşar, Selâhaddin İçli, Etem Ruhi Üngör, Süheylâ Altmışdört), “Taş Plâk Akşamı” (with Fikret-İncilâ Bertuğ), “Türk Klâsik Musikisinde Genç Kuşak”, “Türk Halk Musikisinde Genç Kuşak”, “Türk Klasik Musikisinde Genç Kuşağın Öncüleri”, and “Türk Halk Musikisinde Genç Kuşağın Öncüleri”. He conducted the performance named “Rose and Tulip”, which represented Turkey, in the Expo World Fair in Japan in 2005.

As of today, Güntekin has served as a director in the State Choir since 2006; the board member in the Bakırköy Musiki Foundation; and the general secretary in the Türk Musiki Foundation.
