Maksut Koca, who is known as Aşık Maksut Feryadi, was born in Arpaçay, Kars in 1961. He had an interest in music and folk poetry as a child. He learned bağlama (instrument with three double strings) from his father. Koca then studied music with virotuozo Soshertli Hicranı (1899-1978).

Koca became a famous bard in Kars, and moved to Istanbul at the age of 16. He released cassettes and attended many activities and competitions. One of his poems, which he wrote for the 70th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, was selected from 270 poems, and awarded the second prize in a competition, organized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Another poem, which he wrote for the 75th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, was also awarded the second prize by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Koca has not only performed in Turkey, but also in France, Belgium, Holland, Luxenburg, and Russia. He was invited to Harvard University to give a conference on Turkish folk poetry. He has released 15 albums and published the book “Sular Yandı” in 2007. In 2010, Koca received Turkey’s Living Human Treasures 2010 Awards from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism in conjunction with UNESCO. Currently, Koca continues to perform at the Halk Ozanları Kültür Evi, which he founded in 1996.
