Prof. Arife Gülşen Tatu was born in Izmir. In 1971, she graduated from Izmir State Conservatory and worked as an assistant for a year. In 1972, she received a DAAD scholarship and went to Germany. She studied Essen and Freiburg Music College under Prof. Rütters and Prof. Nicolet, working as an assistant. She also served as a solo flutist in the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra. For a while, Tatu taught music in three German music academies including Karlsruhe and Stuttgart Music Colleges.

In 1986, Tatu became a professor at Trossingen Music College. In the same year, she was appointed to a soloist position in the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra. Currently, she performs in the Izmir State Symphony Orchestra. Tatu has given many concerts and flute classes not only in Turkey and Europe but also in Far Eastern countries. She has released many CD albums and received many awards in numerous international flute contests. In 1998, Tatu was invited to Prague by Eva Randova, who is the opera singer and the music director of the Prague State Opera. Tatu performed in the “Carmen Fantasy” with an orchestra and was highly praised. In 1999, she played Mozart’s Flute Concerto with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, which was conducted by Misha Rachlewsky, at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Concert Hall in Moscow to aid earthquake victims in Istanbul. With the Salzburg Mozart Soloists and the Hungarian State Orchestra under the conducting of Prof. Hikmet Şimşek, Tatu recorded Mozart’s Flute Concertos as CDs. She was invited to Sacramento University in California as a guest professor. She has also taught at Cardiff Music Academy in England and Trömsö Music Academy in Norway. In 1998, Tatu received the title of “State Artist” from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
