Timur Selçuk was born in Istanbul in 1945. He is the son of the legendary Turkish neo-classical music composer, Münir Nurettin Selçuk, and the elder brother of the jazz drummer and composer Selim Selçuk. Timur started playing piano at the age of five and gave his first concert at seven. He graduated from Galatasaray High School and Istanbul Municipality Conservatory. He then went to Paris and studied at the Department of Composition and Orchestra conducting at Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. In 1965, he started composing music to the works of poets including Ümit Yaşar and Faruk Nadiz. Selçuk released his first record in 1967. He then began to give his concert series with singing and playing piano.

In 1975, he returned to Turkey and worked on chamber music and film music. He also took voice training from Saadet İkesus. He sang “Ayrılanlar İçin”, “Sen Nerdesin”, “Beyaz Güvercin” and “İspanyol Meyhanesi”. He composed music to poems of Orhan Veli, Attilâ İlhan and Nazım Hikmet, singing them himself. In 1977, Selçuk founded the Istanbul Chamber Orchestra and Çağdaş Müzik Merkezi (Modern Music Center) to teach music to his students. He also worked at Ankara Sanat Theatre for 10 years. He composed music for Bilgesu Erenus’s play “Nereye Payidar”, Uğur Mumcu’s “Saıncalı Piyadesi”, and for other theater plays including "804 İşçi", "Ferhat ile Şirin", "Şeyh Bedrettin Destanı", "Tak-Tik", "Küçük Adam Ne Oldu Sana", "Rumuz Goncagül" and "Galilei-Galileo". Additionally, Selçuk composed background music of films such as "Sarıpınar 1914", "Üç İstanbul", "Cahide", and "Hakkari′de Bir Mevsim". In 1998, he received the title of State Artist from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. He twice participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 and 1989. 

Currently, Selçuk conducts many orchestras and sings at many concerts in Turkey, the US, Russia, England, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria, and Spain.
