Sadun Aksüt was born in Merzifon in 1932. His family moved to Istanbul at his age of one. Aksüt entered the conservatory in Istanbul Municipality and studied under Şefik Gürmeriç and Kemal Gürses. Before finishing conservatory, he continued his study under Hüseyin Sadettin Arel, Dr. Suphi Ezgi and Laika Karabey at the Advanced Turkish Music Conservatory Association. Aksüt learned tambour from Laika Karabey and maestro, İzzettin Ökte at the Üsküdar Musiki Society in 1950. Today Aksüt has conveyed what he learned from İzzettin Ökte to students. In the end of 1951, Aksüt began playing saz with his friends in Istanbul Radio. In 1956, he started working as a public officer in the Istanbul Radio Turkish Musical Note Library. At the same time he continued to play tambour as a soloist or an ensemble member. Between 1966 and 1967, Aksüt played tambour with Turkish Music Performance Group at the Conservatory in Istanbul Municipality. In 1967 he returned to Istanbul Radio and continued to play tambour as a union artist. Until 1975 he joined famous singers’ orchestras, such as Münir Nreddin Selçuk′s. In 1975 Aksüt began serving as a teacher in the Istanbul Turkish Music State Conservatory. He retired from Istanbul Radio (TRT) in 1981 but has continued to work as a teacher in the conservatory until today. Aksüt has composed around 100 songs; 24 chants; around 50 saz works; 3 children’s songs; and one Mevlevi song. His saz works, including “Köyde”, “Gelin Karşılaması” and “Ege’de Şenlik”, were played by Yalçın Tura. These works were performed in the world premiere by the Istanbul Chamber Orchestra (conductor: Hakan Şensoy). In 2004 Aksüt composed most of the pieces in the CD: “Sisli Bir Eylül Gecesi”, which was directed by Dağhan Baydur.
