Tuğrul Tanyol was born in Istanbul in 1953. He graduated from the Sociology Department at Boğaziçi University in 1977. He completed his doctoral degree at Istanbul University. Tanyol has worked as a lecturer at Marmara University and Yeditepe University. His first poem was published in the literary magazine "İnsan" in 1970. He published literary magazines such as “Üç Çiçek”, “Poetika” and “Özgür Edebiyat” with his friends. His poems have been published in many literary magazines including “Gösteri”, “Somut”, “Türkiye Yazıları”, and “Varlık”. Tanyol is considered one of the leading figures of the new poetry of the 80’s. He has also written poetry reviews. In 1980, he received “Sanat Emeği” magazine Poetry Award in a poetry competition, which was held at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. In 1985, he won “Behçet Necatigil Poetry Award” with his book “Ağuston Dehlizleri”. In 1995-1996, Tanyol served as a vice president in the Writers Union of Turkey. A selection of his poems "Los Laberintos de agosto y otros poemas" was published in a Spanish version by Verbum (Madrid) in 2003. In 2006-2007, Tanyol served as a founding member in the Beyoğlu Poetry Festival. In 2016, he received Atiila İlhan Poetry Award for his work "Gelecek Günlerin Şarabı." In the same year, he won the 9th Metin Altıok Poetry Award. Tanyol currently continues his work in Istanbul.
