Prof. Dr. Murat Belge was born in Ankara in 1943. After attending Nişantası Anadolu High School, he received an AFS scholarship and went to Massachusetts as an exchange student. In 1966, he graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University. He completed his master’s and doctoral degree at his alma mater.  While studying at university, he translated works of William Faulkner and James Joyce into Turkish. He was one of the founders of the magazine “Halkın Dostları” (1975) and “Birikim” (1975). Belge received the title of Associate Professorship in 1980 and professorship in 1997. He has written for many magazines such as “Halkın Dostları,” “Birilim,” “Yeni Dergi,” “Yeni Gündem,” “Milliyet Sanat,” and “Papirüs” and newspapers including Demokrat, Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, and Radikal. In 1983, he served as a general director in the "Yeni Gündem" magazine and the İletişim Publications. With the name of Sadık Özben, Belge wrote humor writings in the "Yeni Gündem" magazine. He has taught comparative literature at Istanbul Bilgi University since 1996. He wrote columns for Radikal newspaper before transferring to Taraf newspaper in 2008. Belge has also presented his programs on the Açık Radio and NTV channel. He is a member of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly.
