Art Profile :

Fikret Atay was born in Batman in 1976. He studied fine arts at Dicle University. Since 2002, he has been producing videos. Currently, he has lived and worked in Paris since 2003. Atay primarily works with video, in which his narrative style and manner of filming is comparable to amateur films, something that gives a sense of authenticity and presence to the works. Atay investigates and lays bare the codes and structures that form the basis of a specific culture.

Atay has held solo exhibitions at prestigious contemporary art spaces including Bonner Kunstverein in Germany, Site Gallery in the UK, Hammer Projects in Los Angeles, la Maison de l’Architecture in Paris, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León in Spain and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. His solo exhibition at Viafarini includes his video work “Tinica,” made in 2004 and exhibited as part of the 10th Istanbul International Biennial, as well as “Gooaall” (2009), one of the latest productions of the artist, which focuses on the conflict between tradition and modernity. Atay has participated in the international biennials of Lyon, Alexandria, Sydney, Istanbul and Cetinje. Atay’s work is included in the collections of several prestigious galleries worldwide, including the Tate Modern, the Castile Leon Museum of Contemporary Art, FRAC, MUSAC, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montreal and the Museé du Luxembourg.
