Engin Özendes was born in Bursa. She studied at the Bursa Commercial High School and the Istanbul Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences. She started photography in 1976, when she founded a new monthly periodical magazine “Yeni Fotoğraf” as an owner and editor. She also edited and published “Photography Yearbooks” in 1978 and 1980. Özendes has had many of her articles on photography published in newspapers, magazines and encyclopedias. She has also served as a jury member in numerous photographic competitions, and has given many lectures as well. She published “Photography in the Ottoman Empire 1839-1919” (Istanbul: Haşet Publish house, 1987) and “Photographer Ali Sami 1866-1936” (Istanbul: Haşet Publish house, 1989). In 1990, Özendes received the title of Excellence Fiap by the Federation Internationale de L’Art Photographique. In 1992, she published “Türkiye’de Fotopraf” (Istanbul: İletişim Publications). It was followed by “Photography in the Ottoman Empire 1839-1919” (Istanbul: İletişim Publications, 1995). In 1998, Özendes published “Abdullah Freres Ottoman Court Photographers” (Istanbul: Yapı Kredi Publications). Since 1977, she has worked as a curator and organized many photograph exhibitions not only in Istanbul but also in Switzerland and Italy. She has also prepared many programs on photography for TV. In 2011, Özendes curated the photograph exhibition “Kez Gı Sirem İstanbul” in Istanbul. In 2013, she published "Osmanlı İmparatorluğunda Fotoğrafçılık 1839-1923" (Istanbul: YEM, 2013).
