Can Göknil was born in Ankara in 1945. She finished the American College for Girls in Istanbul in 1966. She graduated from the Department of Painting in Knox College, School of Fine Art, Galesburg (Illinois) in 1968 and completed her master’s degree at the Department of Painting, the City College of the University of New York, School of Fine Arts in 1969. She has had many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Her works can be seen in: Museo d’Arte Moderna, San Marino (1973); Turkish House; New York (1977); House of Humor and Satire, Bulgaria (1985, 1995 and 1999); Women’s Library and Information Center, Bulgaria (1985); Women’s Library and Information Center, Istanbul (1991); Schenectady Museum, New York (1998); Chihiro Art Museum, Tokyo (1999); Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Art Library London (2005). Göknil was awarded the Golden Aesop (first prize) in the 15th International Biennial of Humor and Satire in the Arts, Gabrovo in 2001.
