Ahmet Kalkan was born in Trabzon in 1946. He finished Trabzon High School and Teacher Training High School in the same city. He was the student of Kayıhan Keskibok, Zühtü Ellezoğlu and Mustafa Beşgen. Kalkan taught at a primary school for three years. In 1967, he had his first solo exhibition in the Trabzon Health Gallery.

In 1969, Kalkan entered the Painting Department of Atatürk Education Institute (the Faculty of Atatürk Education of Marmara University). He studied drawing and graphics with Mustafa Tömekçe, Prof. Ramiz Aydın, İlhami Demirci, Selahattin Turan and Prof. S. Saim Tekcan.

Kalkan worked as an art teacher in Trabzon, Erzincan and Istanbul and retired in 1997. He has had many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. His works can be seen in private collections in Turkey and abroad. He has been drawing pictures of birds for the last three years to express his philosophy of freedom. He is a member of International Association of Plastic Arts. As of today, Kalkan continues to work at his own studios in Istanbul and Şarköy.
