Köken Ergun was born in Istanbul in 1976. He studied theater acting with the playwright Güngör Dilmen and the actress Yıldız Kenter at the Istanbul State Conservatory of Istanbul University. He completed his postgraduate degree in Classics at King′s College in London. Between 1998 and 2002, he worked with American theatre director Robert Wilson. In 2001, Ergun presented öte-oceanwide, an installation / performance project on the occasion of the Istanbul Biennial with Carlos Soto, Ferhat Karakaya and Dominic Reeves. Ergun continued his master’s degree in Visual Communication Design at Bilgi University. He then became involved with contemporary art, specifically video and performance.

Ergun’s works often have a political edge. He has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in many group exhibitions and performances in Turkey and abroad. His video works have also screened in several film festivals, including the Oberhausen, Rotterdam, Sydney, VideoZone and Zagreb Film Festivals. He is the 2007 recipient of the Tiger Award of the Rotterdam Film Festival for his short film “The Flag”. In 2010, his work was presented in the ARS (Artists in Residence Show) in Milan. Since 2007, Ergun has been based in Berlin.
