İpek Duben was born in Istanbul. She finished her master’s degree at the University of Chicago and went to New York Studio School. She completed her doctoral degree at Mimar Sinan University. Besides being an actively exhibiting artist, Duben is the author and editor of several books and articles on art and criticism. Her training in political science, sociology and art informs all of her work, which involves identity issues, and political and social criticism. Since 1994, Duben has largely been making Artists′ Books focused on identity, domestic violence and migration. These works are exhibited variously as light, sound and video installations. Her works can be seen in international public and private collections in the US, Turkey, Japan, France and United Kingdom including the Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul, Museum Voor Volkenkunde Rotterdam, Museum of the City of Istanbul, Istanbul Turco-British Association.
