Derya Yücel was born in Istanbul in 1979. She graduated from the Art Management Program at Yıldız Technical University. She completed her master′s degree in the museum studies at her alma mater.  In 2006, she worked with curators such as René Block, Barbara Heinrich, and Aleksandra Estela Bjelica Mladenoviç at a workshop in Belgrade.

Yücel has organized many exhibitions in Istanbul, including "From Owner with View," "Between Two Sides," and "Free Zone/Neutral Ground." She organized 6th and 7th Korean-Turkish exchange exhibitions in Incheon, Seoul, and Istanbul. She also realized mixed exhibitions “Self Diversity, Manipulate, Unhomely.” She curated the exhibition "Save As… Contemporary Art from Turkey" (collaborated with Santral Istanbul) in the Triennial Bovisa in Milan in 2008. In 2009, Yücel curated the exhibition "28th Today Turkish Artists" with Slovenian curator Simona Vidmar at the Akbank Art Center.

The exhibition "Memory City," which Yücel organized within the context of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture portable Art Projects, was exhibited in different places in Istanbul from 2008 to 2009. The exhibition "Uluorta: International and Openly: Video-Art Selection International Women Artists exhibition in 2010," which she curated in 2010, was exhibited in the Art Port Warehouse in Istanbul. In May 2011, she was invited to the “Curated By_Vienna: East by South West,” and she worked for Galerie Hubert Winter with Nil Yalter. Yücel currently works as a lecturer at Istanbul Culture University and Istanbul Bilgi University. She has written many articles on art for magazines and newspapers in Turkey since 2004. She is a member of AICA (International Art Critics Organization).
