Merih Akçam was born in Istanbul in 1955. Her father is Abdulhalim Pasha`s nephew, who lived in Istanbul as a governor of a sanjak during the period of Ottoman Empire. Her mother is from the Schinkel family, who has members have worked working as architects for the royal family in Germany. Akçam started taking personal lessons in west philosophy and human psychology and studied on metaphysics at the age of thirteen. She opened her first exhibition in Kadıköy in 1969. After graduating from Kadıköy College for Girls in 1972, Akçam gave all her attention to art. She took painting lessons from teachers such as İsmet Toprak, Mehmet Pesen and Prof. Devrim Erbil in Academy of Mimar Sinan University and improved her drawing. After her point of view settled in 1982, she started paintings using metaphysics and esoteric subjects called “the isolation of surreal symbolism” in 1990. Since then, she has continued working with Prof. Devrim Erbil and shown an important progress in gravure. Akçam tries to draw compositions on the secret of life and beyond the life. She works with four elements: among these, water is the one, she works deeply on. Akçam has had 27 solo exhibitions and participated in 84 group exhibitions in Turkey and foreign countries including Germany, North Cyprus and America. She has also attended panels, conferences and written poetry. Her works can be seen in private collections both in Turkey and abroad.
