Art Profile :

Burak Arıkan was born in Istanbul in 1976. After graduating from the Civil Engineering Department at Yıldız Technical University in 2001, he completed his Master′s degree in Visual Communication Design at Istanbul Bilgi University in 2004. He then went to the US and completed his master’s degree at MIT Media Laboratory in the Physical Language Workshop (PLW) led by John Maeda. While at MIT, he pursued research exploring networked systems that address the transition from connectivity to collectivity in the context of creative expression.

Arıkan takes social, economic, and political issues as input and runs through abstract machinery, which generates network maps and algorithmic interfaces. This results in performances, and renders inherent power relationships visible, and thus discussable. His software, prints, installations, and performances have been featured in numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries internationally. Arıkan is the founder of Graph Commons platform, to provide “network intelligence” for everyone.

Arıkan has presented his work internationally at institutions including Museum of Modern Art New York, Venice Architecture Biennale, Berlin Biennale, Ars Electronica, Sonar, DEMF, Neuberger Museum of Art, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Borusan Contemporary, DEPO, ARTER, SALT; and at independent venues such as Art Interactive Cambridge, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Hafriyat, Turbulence (online). He has lectured and done workshops at institutions including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rhode Island School of Design, New York University Interactive Telecommunications Program, Istanbul Technical University, Bogazici University, Sabanci University, and Istanbul Bilgi University. Arıkan currently lives and works in Istanbul and New York.
