Ayla Makas was born in Istanbul in 1963. She graduated from the Program of Arabic Language and Literature in the Department of Eastern Languages in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University. She learned marbling art (Ebru) and obtained her professional license in marbling art from Hikmet Barutçugil and Fuat Başar. After working as an English teacher at middle schools, Makas founded her marbling workshop. She also learned calligraphy from Hüseyin Kutlu and illumination art (Tezhip) from Cemile Baybura, and took a Ney class from Burcu Sönmez. Makas has had many solo exhibitions, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Currently, she teaches at her workshop and the Caferağa Medresesi workshop in Istanbul.
