Arzu Başaran was born in Istanbul in 1963. In 1985, she graduated from the Painting Department at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. She held her first solo exhibition at the Berk Art Gallery in Istanbul in 1986. In 1989, Başaran went to Rome with the Italian Government′s fellowship and researched painting at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. In 2000, With the support of French Culture Center and Siyah-Beyaz Art Gallery, she got a residency at the Cite Indernationale des Arts in Paris in 2000 with a support of the Istanbul French Cultural Center and Siyah Beyaz Gallery. Başaran has held numerous solo exhibitions, including "İhlal" (Violation) at Gallery Apel (Istanbul 2005) and the Diyarbakır Art Centre (Diyarbakır 2006), and "Maduniyet – Eşikte olma hali" (Subalternity – The Liminal Subjects) at the Mac Art Gallery (Istanbul 2010). She has participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad Başaran currently continues her work in Istanbul.
