Aramis Kalay was born in Istanbul in 1953. He started taking pictures as a teenager after he bought his first camera with savings from his pocket money. His contribution to photography encompasses photojournalism, photography direction, and jury membership for contests. He also wrote a weekly column entitled “Fotopratik” for the Turkish daily newspaper Star. Kalay has participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He has been awarded several national and international prizes. In 1987 Kalay held his first solo exhibition in Paris. Since then he has held 12 solo exhibitions in Turkey. In 1990 his 20 photographs themed "shades" were included in the collection of Bibliotheque nationale de France. In the following year, Kalay was invited to the Photography Festival, which was held in Aix en Provence, France. In 1993 he participated in the AFSAD 4th Photography Symposium and presented his paper. His photographs and articles have been published in various journals and newspapers. Kalay served in the executive board of IFSAK. He has also taught photography at IFSAK. Kalay currently works as a freelance photographer in Istanbul and leads workshops in urban outdoors, night, portrait, and nude themes at the Kadiköy Photography Center.
