Prof. Dr. Reha Günay was born in Istanbul in 1937. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Istanbul Yıldız Technical University in 1960. He completed his doctoral degree in art history at Istanbul University. He worked as an architect, restoration architect, and architectural photographer and professor of conservation and restoration in the Faculty of Architecture at Yıldız Technical University. Since 1978, Günay has taught architectural photography at Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul. He also teaches at Yeditepe University.

During 1979–1980, Günay was a fellow of the Japan Foundation. He has continued restoration work of the antique theatre in Side since 1992. Günay’s research, essays, and photography have been published as monographs and include “Traditional Safranbolu Houses and Their Formation” (1981), “Japanese Art and Culture Through the Ages” (1986), “Sinan’s Istanbul” (1987), “Places and Expression Techniques in the Miniatures of the Süleymanname” (1992), “Tradition of the Turkish House and Safranbolu Houses” (1998), “Sinan: the Architect and His Works” (1998), and “Traditional Wooden Buildings: Problems and Solutions” (2002). He has also published architectural restoration and conservation works and contributed photographs to publications including “Süleyman the Great,” “Masterpieces from the Topkapı Palace,” “The Art of Bookmaking in Central Asia,” “The Anatolian Civilizations,” and “the Works of Leading Architects in Turkey.” He has served as a jury member in many international and national photography competitions. Günay has received many awards for his photography works. He has given many slide shows including “Karatepe-Pastoral,” “Abstre-Bach,” “İzlenimler,” “Boğaziçi’nin Sorunları,” “Schnoor,” “Safranbolu Evleri,” “Ormana: Toros Dağlarında bir Köy,” “Japon Evi,” “Psycho,” and “A Holiday Village.” In 2010, Günay had his photograph exhibition “Japanese Photographs” in the Historical Japanese Consulate General in Istanbul.
