Art Profile :

Nursret Çolpan was born in 1952 in the town of Bandırma, He graduated from the Department of Architecture at Yıldız University in Istanbul. During this time, he studied with two of the leading authorities in Turkish illumination and miniature painting, Dr. Süheyl Ünver and Azade Akar. Çolpan was greatly inspired by the work of Matrakçı Nasuh, the acclaimed miniaturist in the court of Süleyman the Magnificent. Nasuh, a historian as well as a painter, not only immortalized sixteenth century Istanbul, and other Ottoman cities, but also the cities of Toulon and Genoa, whose European architecture he rendered in classical miniature style. Whether Çolpan depicted Istanbul in the sixteenth century or present-day, he represented them both with a noticeable respect. The tile miniatures of Istanbul underground stations belong to him. He made special tile miniatures, which show Paris for the President of France, H.E. Jacques Chirac and Moscow for the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. Many of Çolpan′s paintings are now located in private collections in New York, Germany, England and Japan, as well as in Turkey. One of his miniatures is a part of the permanent collection at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California as well. Nursret Çolpan passed away in 2008.
