Nimet Sanlıman finished the American College for Girls (Robert College) in 1947. She started making folkloric dolls under her teacher Zehra Müfit. Sanlıman had her first exhibition at the American News Desk in Beyoğlu, Istanbul in 1955. She was highly praised for her successful exhibition by the American News Desk and offered to have other exhibitions at their branches in Ankara and Izmir. After finishing her exhibition in Ankara, her dolls in Derviş and Sema composition were purchased by Konya Mevlana Museum and exhibited for a long time. A Turcokog, Anne Marie Shimmel ordered similar dolls from Sanlıman, and they were sent to the Margburg Museum of Religions. To learn other Turkish Arts, Sanlıman participated both in the illumination and miniature classes of Prof. Dr. Süheyl Ünver at Topkapı Palace Museum and Fine Art Academy, Sculpture Workshop. In 1961, Sanlıman founded the Elif Bebek (doll) workshop on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu, Istanbul. She prepares doll’s arms, hands, legs, heads and bodies using materials such as natural gum Tragacanth and cotton, then assembles them. She expends care in using real folklore costumes. Sanlıman makes dolls using corn peels as well. She has taught the making of folkloric dolls at the Recreation Association, the American school and the Gültepe Public Education Center.
