Atıf Atalayer was born in Karaman in 1947. He graduated from the Textile Department at the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1972. He worked as a textile printing designer at a textile company in 1972-1974. In 1972, he started making batik wax at his studio in Beşiktaş. Between 1980 and 1988, Atalayer served as a lecturer in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University. He continued his research on textile painting using batik wax technique. He worked as an art advisory at Huma Textile A.Ş. between 2000 and 2004.

Atalayer has developed batik wax technique with applying traditional textile dyeing technique. He researches Anatolian culture and creates iron batik mold with his own designs. He has had many solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Turkey and Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Oman, and China. He has participated in many competitions, which were organized by important institutions and companies such as the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Vakko, and has won 10 prizes and numerous awards of merit. Between 2007 and 2008, Atalayer taught batik wax at Kadıköy Municipality İnönü Vocational School. Currently, he serves as a lecturer in the Department of Mode and Design at Anadolu University.
