Ferhan Taylan Erder was born in Samsun in 1939. In 1959, she finished Istanbul American College for Girls. She graduated from the Painting Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1961.  Between 1959 and 1963, Erder worked in the workshop of Taylan Ceramics Factory.  She then worked in the ceramic factory of Krösserbachel Fayanse in Germany between 1962 and 1963. Erder went to Italy and studied at the Rome Telecommunication Faculty (PRODEO) between 1963 and 1965. She continued her study at ICCROM (International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) between 1981 and 1982. She then worked at the USOART Ceramic and Art Design Studio with Prof. Astengo on colored clay and porcelain in 1984-1988. In 1988, Erder attended a class of ceramic and porcelain restoration at the ICCROM. She has had ten solo exhibitions, two of which were abroad, and participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions. She has received three awards: International Art Ceramic Honorary Prize in Prague (1962); Gualda Tadino International Art Ceramic Grand Prize in Italy (1985) and Turkish Ceramic Society competition, Special Jury Prize in Turkey (1992). Since 1989, Erder has been teaching ceramic class at Bilkent University, the Department of Architecture in the Faculty of Fine Arts. She produces the objects that she hopes to see in her environment within a visual perspective of ceramics technique.
