Prof. Faruk Taşkale was born in Nevşehir. He graduated from the Department of Foreign Language Education in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1986. He completed his master’s degree (1991) and doctoral degree (1994) in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University. Between 1980 and 1984, he attended classes in the Topkapı Palace Museum to learn Traditional Turkish Arts. Between 1983 and 1987, he studied restoration work of book bindings with Prof. Emin Barın. Taşkale learned illumination art from Rikkat Kunt between 1985 and 1986. In 1989, he started working as an assistant at the Department of Traditional Turkish Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Mimar Sinan University. Taşkale received the title of assistant professorship in 1996, and associate professorship in 2000. Between 1996 and 2007, he served as a branch chair of illumination art in the Department of Traditional Turkish Arts at Mimar Sinan University. He has also served as an advisor for various foundations, auction houses and museums. Since 1981, Taşkale has had many solo exhibitions and has participated in lots of group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He has written numerous papers on illumination art, and has published two books: “Rakseden Harfler, Türk Hat Sanatı’ndan Seçme Eserler / Dancing Letters: A Selection of Turkish Calligraphic Art” (Istanbul: Antik A.Ş. Cultural Publications, 2000), and “Hat Sanatında Hilye-i Şerife Hz. Muhammed’in Özellikleri / In Calligraphic Art Hilye-i Şerife, Characteristics of the Prophet Muhammed” (Istanbul: Antik A.Ş., Cultural Publications, 2006).
