M. Efdalüddin Kılıç was born in Istanbul in 1968. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University in 1990. He started studying calligraphy with Hüsrev Subaşı, and learned rik’a writing with Muhiddin Serin. In 1993, Kılıç completed his master’s degree in the Department of Traditional Turkish Handicrafts of the Institute of Social Sciences at his alma mater. He studied sülüs and nesih writings with the master Hasan Çelebi, and received a professional license on calligraphy from Çelebi. In the 1994, Kılıç won a mention prize in the International Calligraphy Competition in the name of Ibn’ul Bawwab, which was organized by IRCICA. Between 1996 and 2000, he prepared a Kufic collection to be applied on tiles by the Iznik Foundation in Istanbul. Between 1997 and 2000, Kılıç restored 20 pieces of famous Egyptian master Seyyid Ibrahim at his workshop in Istanbul. He prepared a 64 m’s long sülüs writing composition for the Üç Şerefeli Mosque in Edirne.

Kılıç has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad including Germany, the US, France, England, Ireland, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia. He has also given many seminars and workshops since 1999. In the same year, he was invited to England to give seminars on Traditional Turkish and Islamic Arts and to teach Calligraphy for two months.

His works can be seen in various collections in Turkey and abroad. Kılıç has served as a calligrapher and supervisor in a calligraphy course and Ottoman Language class at the Cafer Ağa Medresesi since 1988. Currently, he continues to work at his workshop.
