Prof. Dr. Özdemir Nutku was born in Istanbul in 1931. While studying at Robert College, he had an interest in theater. He performed in various plays as an amateur actor. In 1946 he performed as a professional actor in Franz Lehar′s operetta "Skylark" at the Süreyya Cinema. In 1952-1956 Nutku studied at the Department of English Language and Literature in the Faculty of Language, History, and Geography at Ankara University. In 1956 he went to Germany and studied Theater at the Theater Department of Georg-August University in Gottingen. He worked for three years as an assistant of Heinz Hilpert, who was the art director of the Gottingen State Theatre. Nutku produced many plays for various private theatres in Germany. In 1959 he returned to Turkey and started working as an assistant in the Theater Institute, which belonged to the Faculty of Language, History and Geography at Ankara University. Nutku completed his doctorate in 1961, and received Associate Professorship in 1967, and Professorship in 1974. In 1976 Prof. Dr. Nutku established the Theater Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Ege University. He then worked as Chair of the Department of Stage and Visual Arts at Dokuz Eylül University for a long time. Prof. Dr. Nutku has also produced over 60 plays as an acting tutor. He has written more than 2000 articles and published many books. He has also directed numerous international theatre festivals. Prof. Dr. Nutku has been awarded many times for his contribution to the Turkish Theatre.
