Refik Erduran was born in Istanbul in 1928. He wrote his first play "Kahraman" while studying at Robert College. It was performed in the school theatre in 1948. After graduating from Robert College in 1947, he pursued his study in history of theatre and playwriting at the Drama Department of Cornell University in USA. He received his master′s degree in 1949. He served as a reserve officer in the Turkish Brigade during the Korean War. After returning from that war in 1953, Erduran founded the book publishing house Çağlayan with Haldun Sel, and wrote for Dolmuş and Akbaba magazines. He also wrote columns for several newspapers such as Milliyet, Güneş, and Meydan. Erduran has served as the president of the Turkish Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI-UNESCO) since 1986. He was elected President of the Playwrights Committee at the World Congress of ITI-UNESCO in Helsinki in 1989. Erduran has written many screenplays for films and TV programs in Turkey and abroad. Over 40 of his plays have been staged by various theatres, including the State Theatre, Haldun Dormen Theatre, Ali Poyrazoğlu Theatre, Kenter Theatre, Yunus Emre Theatre, Theatre Istanbul, and Yeditepe Theatre. Currently, he is a columnist for Sabah newspaper.
