Kenan Işık was born in Malatya in 1947. He had an interest in theater since his childhood and acted in many plays and read poems. He started acting in amateur theater productions at the Malatya Public House when he was a middle school student. He attended Ankara Atatürk High School. Işık started acting at the Ankara Meydan Stage when he was seventeen years old. He graduated from the Department of Public Administration at Gazi University. In 1973, Işık passed the examination and became an artist at the State Theatre. He worked as an actor, director, and playwright for long years. In 1996, he was appointed to the General Art Director at the Istanbul City Theatre. He retired from the State Theatre in 2000. Işık researched theaters in the US, Germany, and Poland. He served as a board member in the International Theater Institution and the Turkish Playwrights Association. He has written many essays on culture and art in numerous newspapers and magazines. He has also written columns for newspapers such as “Yeni Yüzyıl,” “Yeni Bin Yıl,” and “Akşam.” At the same time, he has written a volume of culture and art in many different books. Işık has served as a moderator and speaker in many national and international conferences and meetings. Between 2000 and 2005, he taught at Istanbul Culture University. As a professional theatrical actor, he has written, performed, and directed more than 100 plays. In addition, he has written Children′s plays such as “Behçet Bey’in Fört Şapkası,” “Bebek Uykusu,” “Olmayan Kadın,” “Aşk Hastası,” and “Keloğlan ve Zülfüsarı.” Işık staged Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s work “Huzur”, Karen Blixen’s work “Ölümsüz Öykü” and Turhan Selçuk’s comic “Abdülcanbaz”.

Işık is the holder of more than 30 awards, which have been given by several universities and many media organizations and associations. He was awarded “the best playwright” prize by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism for his play “Bebek Uykusu” and “Olmayan Kadın”, mention prize for the play “Behçet Bey’in Fötr Şapkası” (İş Bank Theater Competition), and “Keloğlan ve Zülfüsarı” (TBMM Competition of Theaters for Children), the International Theater Institute Europe Prize for the play “Olmayan Kadın.” For the play “Huzur,” Işık received the best application prize from the Turkish Writer’s Association and the best theater prize from the Bakırköy Municipality Theatre.

In addition to his awards as a playwright, Işık has also received many awards as a director. He received “best director” prize twice from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ulvi Uraz “best director” prize, İsmet Kuntay “best director” prize twice, “best director” prize from the Playwright Association, jury special prize in the Macedonia Festival, Turkish Critiques Society Award for Nazım Hikmet’s play “İvan İvanoviç Var Mıydı Yok Muydu,” Avni Dilliğil “best director” prize, and Avni Dilliğil “most successful production” prize with Aziz Nesin’s play “Yaşar Ne Yaşar Ne Yaşamaz”.

Işık has published “Araf Yazıları,” “Geçti Gitti Kirpiklerimin Arasından,” “Uyarlama Oyunları”, and “Tiyatro Oyunlar.” He has also released a poetry cassette. In 2007, he served as an advisor in the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism for a year. Currently, Işık is the art advisor in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the executive board member of ATV. He presents the program “Dünya Bir Oyun Sahnesi” on TV.
