Göksel Kortay was born in Istanbul in 1939. After graduating from Robert College, she went to the US and finished Bennington College Summer School. She completed her master′s degree in Acting and Directing at the Department of Theater and Television of Boston University. She also received a diploma on English Language and Literature at Michigan University. Kortay worked as an actor and director for various plays in San Francisco and Massachusetts. She also worked as a production director for the program "Say When" and "Tonight Show," which were broadcasted on NBC Television in New York. Kortay returned to Istanbul in 1962 and worked at the Kenter Theatre, where she first performed in Bertolt Brecht′s play "Üç Kuruşluk Opera." She also served as a program specialist at the TRT Istanbul Radio and directed many radio plays. Besides the Kenter Theatre, Kortay worked for many theatres including Dormen Theatre, Altan Erbulak-Metin Serezli Theatre, Nisa Serezli-Tolga Aşkıner Theatre, and Gönül Ülkü-Gazanfer Özcan Theatre. In 1970, Kortay went to Rome and London with the Dormen Theatre to stage the play "A Tale of Istanbul." In 1978, she performed in the Necati Cumalı′s "Nalınlar" with the International Istanbul Players Theater Company at the Old Vic Theatre in London. Since 1964, Kortay has continued acting in many plays and teaching at the Müjdat Gezen Art Center. She also taught at Doğuş University and Kadir Has University.

In addition to acting, Kortay has translated foreign plays into Turkish, as well as staged them. She has acted in more than 150 plays and over 20 Turkish films and TV series. Kortay served as a director at the Theater Actors Association for 12 years. She served as a jury member in the Afife Jale Theater Awards for 5 years. Kortay currently continues to act in plays and TV series.
