Cemal Ünlü graduated from the Theater Department at Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory in 1983. He then started working as an assistant director and actor at the Istanbul State Theatre. He performed in many theater plays such as "Harput’ta bir Amerikalı," "Ihlamur Ağacı," "Abdülcambaz," "3 kuruşluk opera" (as an actor and assistant director), "Ferhat ile Şirin" (as an actor and director), "Kedi Oyunu" and "Jul Sezar." In the 2003-2004 season, Ünlü directed and staged his documentary-musical play "Kaçsam Bırakıp" in the Konya State Theatre. He taught acting at the Theatre Department of Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory. Ünlü currently continues performing in the Istanbul State Theatre. He has also taught acting at the Dialogue Anlatım İletişim. Besides being an actor, Ünlü is a collector and researcher of gramophones and plaques. He worked as an advisor for the exhibition "Gramofon ve Taş Plak" in 1996. He published a book entitled "Git Zaman Gel Zaman" (Istanbul: Pan Publications, 2000). Ünlü won a Journalists Union Radio Achievement Award in 2002.
