Sabahat Akkiraz was born in Kangal, Sivas in 1955. In her childhood, she started musical education with the mother of her grand mother Firdevs Hanım and famous poets including Davut Sulari, Mahzuni Şerif, Feyzullah Çınar and Daimi. At the age of 13, she released her first 45’ album, which was accompanied with Orhan Gencebay and Arif Sağ. In addition to Alevi-Bektaşi culture, she learned about Anatolian folk songs and elegies. Akkiraz moved to Germany with her family when she was 14 years old. She introduced what she learned at many workshops, panels, and universities in Germany. She has also participated in numerous conferences in Turkey and abroad. In 1983, she started her professional music career and released the album “Gül Yüzlü Secdiğim”. Two years later, she returned to Turkey and continued her work. Akkiraz worked with directors such as Arif Sağ, Musa Eroğlu, Yavuz Top, Zafer Gündoğdu, Erdal Erzincan and Erol Parlak, and made many albums.

In 1990’s, Akkiraz was invited to Holland and gave four concerts. She was also invited to the London Jazz Festival. She realized the project of “Echoes from Anatolia” with the Grand Union Orchestra. She performed in the project “Where the Rivers Meet” at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. She represented Turkey in the project of “Women of Tradition” and sang Anatolian folk songs at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 1999, Akkiraz gave a concert in Cite De la Music in Paris. In the same year, she had a concert tour in France. In 2000, she gave a concert in the Theatre De La Ville in Paris. She was introduced in many newspapers and TVs such as Le Figaro, Le Monde and Mezzo TV program. In 2001, she had her concert tour with Jaspering de Jong in Holland. In the same year, she gave a concert with Sheikh Ahmed El Tuni and Sister Marie Keyrous in Brazil. In 2008, Akkiraz gave a concert with Bass and Baritone singer Thomas Quasthoff in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. She has given numerous concerts with worldwide famous artists including Arif Sağ, Erdal Erzincan, Grand Union Orc, Jaspering De Jong, Musa Eroğlu, Orient Expressions, Mercan Dede, Erkan Oğur, Erol Parlak, Thomas Quasthoff, Leman Sam, Hüsnü Şenlendirici, and Candan Erçetin in Switzerland, Morocco, Malaysia, Norway, Spain and Mexico. Her albums have been released in 16 countries in the world.

Akkiraz founded her music company and started producing music. Not only her own albums, she has released many albums including the CD of Barbaros Erköse, Norrda, Kurban, Erol Parlak Bağlama Beşlisi, Mustafa Özarslan, and Asia Minor. Her composition “Beni Beni” was sung by Azam Ali and Niyaz group, and it was used as the film music for Harrison Ford’s film “Crossing Over”.
