Ahmet Kaya was born in Istanbul in 1963. He started playing mandolin at the age of seven. He had an interest in ney when he was in high school. Encouraged by his father Lüthiye Teoman Kaya, he became a student of ney player Erdoğan Köroğlu. At the same time, Kaya learned how to make music instruments from his father.

Upon an invitation of the chief ney master Doğan Ergin, Kaya became a member of the Konya Sufi Music corps in 1981. In 1982, he became a student of Cafer Açın in the Department of the Manufacturing of Musical Instruments at Istanbul Technical University, Turkish Music State Conservatory. At the same time, he attended ney classes of Niyazi Sayın. Outside of the university, Kaya had the opportunity to study ney with some successful ney masters such as Cahit Gözkân, Süheyla Altmışdört, Laika Karabey, Kâni Karaca and Nezih Uzel.

In 1989 and 1990, Kaya was a member of the Group of Musicians for Turkish Music at Istanbul University State Conservatory. He taught the course “the Manufacture and the History of Stringed Instruments” for four years. In 1991, Kaya became a member of Istanbul Historical Turkish Music Ensemble, which belongs to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Currently, he continues to perform in this ensemble. He also composes and plays trumpet and büyülü in the section of janissary music. As well as this ensemble, Kaya has performed with numerous ensembles during more than 1000 concerts in abroad including Spain, Germany, Portugal, Japan, Holland, Belgium and Austria.

As a chief ney master (neyzenbaşı), Kaya served in the Mevlevi ceremonies, which were organized in Galata Mevlevi Dervish Lodge for five years. He released the CD album “Peşrev-i Şah-u Huban”. He has trained many students over the years. In 2003, Kaya published the book of “Ney Method”.
