Filiz Ali was born in Istanbul in 1937. She studied piano at the Ankara State Conservatory. After graduating from the conservatory in 1958, she went to the United States with a Fulbright scholarship to pursue her study in piano at the New England Conservatory in Boston and the Mannes College of Music in New York. Ali completed her study in music at King′s College in London. She prepared music programs for TRT from 1962 to 1995. Prof. Ali taught piano as the head of the Musicology Department at Mimar Sinan University from 1990 to 2005. In 1998, she founded Ayvalık International Music Academy (AIMA). She has been writing music reviews for Turkish daily newspapers. Prof. Ali served as the artistic director in the CRR concert hall from 1989 to 1992. Since 1995 she has been a musical advisor of the International Eskişehir Music Festival. Ali is the Turkish representative of the International Music Council and European Music Council. In 2015, she received an Honorary Award in the 43rd Istanbul Music Festival.

Prof. Ali has published many books including "Müzisyen Portreleri" (Istanbul: Yapı Kredi Yayınları, 2016), "Sabahattin Ali-Anılar, İncelemeler, Eleştriler" (Istanbul Yapı Kredi Yayınları, 2014), "Müzikli Geziler" (Istanbul Yapı Kredi Yayınları, 2012), "Filiz Hiç Üzülmesin" (Istanbul: Yapı Kredi Yayınları, 2011) and "Elektronik Müziğin Öncüsü Bülent Arel" (Istanbul: İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları, 2002). She is a member of the Balkan Music Forum. Prof. Ali currently directs Ayvalık International Music Academy and teaches at Sabancı University.
