Erol Sayan

Erol Sayan was born in Kastamonu, Araç district in 1936. He finished Industrial Vocational High school. He started learning music in 1954. In 1961 he won the examination to enter Ankara Radio and started playing tambour. He applied harmony knowledge, which he learned from Dr. Recan Özdil, to compose his works. Sayan also learned academic music theory from his teacher, İsmail Baha. Sayan investigated Turkish music and composed his works. Until 1964, he gave classes on music theory and basics as well as chorus works at the Technical Training College for Boys. In 1967 Sayan established a chorus group at the Middle East Technique University in Ankara. Not only giving concerts, he also researched Turkish music: tone system; makam composition; procedural codes and so on. Since 1983, Sayan has taught his music repertoires at Istanbul Technical University and the Turkish Music Conservatory as well as Middle East Technical University. He has composed over 310 works. He has won first prize awards in numerous contests on compositions. In 1985, Sayan won first prize with his composition: “Ömrümüzün Baharı Birlikte Geçsin” in a contest, which was organized by TRT. Turkey was represented by this works in the Asian Vision Song Contest. Sayan has given over 230 concerts in many faculties and Universities with his chorus.
