Erol Evgin was born in Istanbul in 1947. He finished Istanbul High School for Boys. After graduating from the Architecture Department at Mimar Sinan University, he worked as tutor at university for a year. In 1969, Evgin released his first 45 album “Sen ve Eski Günler”. Later, he worked with Çiğdem Talu and Melih Kibar and released “İşte Öyle Bir Şey”, “Sevdan Olmasa”, “Bir de Bana Sor”, “İçimdeki Fırtına”, “Etme Eyleme”, “Söyle Canım”, “Deli Divane”, and “Hep Böyle Kal”. Evgin received Golden Album Award for his albums “İşte Öyle Bir Şey” and “Söyle Canım”. In 1997, he released “Sen Unutulacak Kadın Mısın?”, which was consisted primarily of his compositions.
In addition to his musical activities, Evgin performed in theaters. Between 1980 and 1984, he acted in a leading role at musicals “Hisseli Harikalar Kumpanyası” (400 times) and “Şen Sazın Bülbülleri” (200 times), which were written and directed by Haldun Dormen. He also acted in three musical films “Meryem ve Oğulları”, “Renkli Dünya” and “Bir İlkbahar Sabahı”, and in the TV drama “İhlamurlar Altında”. In 1986, Evgin founded a drawing office with his wife, who is also an architect. In 1989, he founded Popüler Müzik Sanatı Vakıf (POPSAV) (Popular Music Arts Foundation) and served as a board chairman for three years.
Evgin presented a competition program “Süper Aile” on Show TV between 1992 and 1994. He also directed and presented “Erol Evgin Show” program on TRT 1 between 1995 and 1996; and “Bir Sevda Masalı” program (100 volumes) on Kanal D and Star TV between 2000 and 2003. In 2002, he gave a concert show tour called “Baba-Oğul” with his son and pop singer Murat Evgin. In 2003, Evgin released “İbadetim”.
In 2005, Evgin was selected as honorary president of Popüler Müzik Sanatı Vakfı (Popular Music Art Foundation). In the same year, he released “İşte Öyle Bir Şey” comprised of 20 songs, composed by Çiğdem Talu and Melih Kibar. Evgin has prepared and given concerts like “Mustafa Kemal’i Gördüm Düşümde” since 2005. In 2006, he released “Tüm Bir Yaşam”, which consists of classic Turkish pop music including “Deli Divane”, “Rüya”, “Söyle Canım”, “Memleket Hasreti” and “Bir Bakışın Yetti”.
Besides his musical activities, Evgin has painted for 8 years. He had his first solo exhibition “Miras” at the Ortaköy Art Gallery in 2005. His second exhibition was held in the State Museum of Painting and Sculpture in Izmir in 2006. It was followed by other exhibitions at Semih Balcıoğlu Art Gallery in Ürgüp (2006) and a gallery in the Faculty of Architecture at Karadeniz University in Trabzon (2006).
Evgin has composed hundreds of songs and given numerous concerts in Turkey and abroad including Germany, Switzerland, France, England, Holland, Poland, Iran and the US. He has been awarded over 100 art prizes. Currently, he continues to work as chairman of the supreme advisory board of POPSAV.
