Engin Gürkey was born in Istanbul in 1967. In 1976, he started music education with Yücel Berrak at the Percussion Department of the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. In 1992, he graduated from the Istanbul University State Conservatory. In the same year, he began teaching at Istanbul University State Conservatory. He performed with the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra as a guest artist between 1985 and 1992. In 1994, Gürkey completed his master’s degree at his alma mater. In 2000, he founded Gürkey Percussion Workshop. He has participated in many concerts and festivals with Gürkey Percussion Workshop, the Engin Gürkey Percussion Group, and the Engin Gürkey Ensemble. He has also performed in many concerts and festivals with the Istanbul Municipal City Theater Orchestra, the Ayangil Turkish Music Chamber Orchestra and Chorus, the Enka Symphony Orchestra, the CRR Symphony Orchestra, the Istanbul Chamber Orchestra, the National Reinsurance Chamber Orchestra, the Akbank Chamber Orchestra, the Istanbul Percussion Ensemble, the Turquaz Dance Company, Velvele, the Chamelon Quartet, Piano′nun Türküsü, Mızrabın Nefesi, Hi-jazz, Yansımalar, İncesaz and the Hybrid Project.
Gürkey has established the groups such as Istanbul Percussion Group (1992), Zilli (2006), which is the first female percussion group in Turkey, and Nabız (2008). He has received numerous awards for his music and activities. He generally uses classical percussion instruments in combination with Turkish, Latin American, and African percussion instruments. Currently, Gürkey continues to teach at both the Istanbul University State Conservatory and the Istanbul Technical University MIAM. He also presents his program “World Percussion and Rhythms” at the Gürkey Percussion Workshop.
