Muammer Sun was born in Ankara in 1932. He began his musical study in 1946 at the Military Music School. He continued his education at the Ankara State Conservatory, where he studied composition with Adnan Saygun. He also studied piano with Mithat Fenmen, orchestral conducting with Ferit Alnar, folk music with Muzaffer Sarısözen, traditional art music with Ruşen Kam, and Turkish music harmony with Kemal İlerici. After graduating from the Ankara State conservatory in 1960, Sun taught theory and harmony at the Ankara, Izmir, and Istanbul State Conservatories as well as at the Music Department of Gazi University Institute of Education and Ankara TRT Radio.

Sun, who was appointed to the TRT Board of Administration in 1969, became a pioneer in the development of TRT’s music authority, art awards, and chorus system. At the same time, he worked effectively to secure the reorganization of the elementary music programs at the Ministry of Education, and was instrumental in the founding of youth choirs. With the support of the Prime Ministry, he was also a major participant in the effort to found hundreds of children’s choruses throughout Anatolia.

Besides being an administrator and educator, Sun has composed thousands of pieces for piano, orchestra, and choirs. Sun retired from teaching at the Composition Department in the Hacettepe University State Conservatory in 1999. In 2004, he founded Sun Publications, where he has published many books on music. Sun has received many awards and prizes for his contribution to Turkish music. In 1998, he was awarded the title of State Artist by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
