Hakan Kalkan was born in Ankara in 1969. He entered the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Bilkent University in 1987 and studied piano with Nuran Taşpınar, music theory with İstemighan Taviloğlu, Sami Hatipoğlu and Bujor Hoinic, and solfeggio, composition and orchestra conducting with Bujor Hoinic. He completed master’s degree in 1996. In the same year, he went to France and studied composition electro acoustic with Denis Dufour, orchestra conducting with Daniel Tosi, cello with Marie. M. Mille and percussion instruments with Andre Mallau at Conservatoire National de Musique de Perpignan. Kalkan received Premier Prix in the Department of Orchestra conducting and graduated in 1998. During his study, he participated in many festivals and summer master classes, and conducted numerous concerts.

After he returned to Turkey, Kalkan served as a tutor in the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Bilkent University. He also conducted Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra for three years. In addition, he taught music theory, solfeggio, dictation and orchestra conducting. He also served as an academic coordinator and director of Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. During this period, he completed his doctoral degree, proficient in art on composition.

He has conducted famous Turkish orchestras such as the Capital Chamber Orchestra, the Mersin State Opera and Ballet, the Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra, the Eskişehir Municipality Symphony Orchestra, the Bursa Regional State Symphony Orchestra, the Antalya State Symphony Orchestra and the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra. Since 2006, Kalkan has continued to work as a conductor in the Antalya State Opera and Ballet.
