Cahit Berkay was born in Isparta, the district of Uluborlu in 1946. In 1959 he moved to Istanbul with his family. He finished Istanbul Kabataş High School for Boys and graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University. Berkay began playing mandolin during primary school. Between 1960 and 1965 he dabbled in music. In 1965, he debuted as a professional musician in the Selçuk Alagöz Orchestra. In 1967, Berkay founded a Turkish rock group “Moğollar”. In 1974, he started composing music for films. Since 2005, he has composed over 149 works for films, 58 works for TV dramas and numerous pieces for commercial programs. Berkay was awarded three times in the Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival. In addition, he was awarded “the best film music” in several foreign film festivals. With the rock group Moğollar, Berkay received a special award “the French Academie Charles Cros Grand Prix Du Disque” in France in 1971. In 2009, he received an honorary award in the 16th Altın Koza Film Festival.
