Boğaziçi University Music Club (BUMC) Jazz Choir was founded in 1994 aiming to vocalize choral arrangements of jazz standards and introduce polyphonic music in domestic and international organizations. Since then, BUMC Jazz Choir has been successful in many ways without losing its dynamism, with its student members, amateur soul and professional line. In 2001, BUMC Jazz Choir started singing songs acappella with no accompaniment of any musical instruments and achieved to be the first Turkish acappella jazz choir. In 2005, the members of the BUMC Jazz Choir, who have contributed for many years and wished to carry on with their lives as professional musicians, formed a group called “Acappella Boğaziçi” and released an album produced by Kerem Görsev. Since 2007, the Choir has been conducted by Masis Aram Gözbek.
BUMC Jazz Choir 2008 members, the winners of the IKSV Young Jazz 2008, who have boosted their success by attending one of the most prestigious contests of the world, Vokal Total, in both pop and jazz categories and won a “silver diploma”. They have also sung in many festivals such as the 15th International Istanbul Jazz Festival and the Akbank 18th Jazz Festival. They carry on with their professional musical careers under the name “Istanbul Essence”. In the 5th World Choir Games, which was held in China in 2010, BUMC Jazz Choir won three gold diplomas, and received second award in the category of Contemporary Music and third award in the Jazz category. In 2011, BUMC Jazz Choir won the first prize in the 6th World Choir Games in Australia. In 2012, Boğaziçi Jazz Choir won the gold medal in the Folklore category of the 7th World Choir Games in Cincinnati.
