Art Profile :

Ayşe Tütüncü started playing the guitar at the age of five. Two years later she undertook her first year of piano study at the conservatory, where she found a love for chamber music. In 1983 she founded her first group “Mozaik” producing four albums until they parted in 1995. The name "mozaik" represented the fusion of rock, western classical music, jazz and also traditional Turkish sounds within their music. With the band “Kömür”, Tütüncü was able to improvise and explore her talents and later performed a collection of songs celebrating the female form with the vocalist Sumru Agiryürüyen. Tütüncü has also collaborated with well-known Turkish "marginal musicians" on numerous studio productions, with the songwriter Bülent Ortaçgil, the folk group “Yeni Türkü”, and the rock band “Bulutsuzluk Özlemi”. Besides several short films, Tütüncü also composed film music for “Vapurlar” with Mehmet Güreli (1986), and Atıf Yılmaz’s “Bekle Dedim Gölgeye” with Serdar Ateşer (1991). She also prepared the musical “Ordaaa Bir Şehir Var Uzak” with Ümit Kıvanç and Bülent Ortaçgil (1994). Tütüncü composed the musical sound of “Sahne Kimlikler 5 / Asrın Entrikası” for the Kumpanya Theatre in 2000 as well.

In addition these, Tütüncü performed in Lawrence "Butch" Morris′s Conducting Improvisation Orchestra staged in 1999. In 1995 Tütüncü founded her second group “The Ayşe Tütüncü Piano Percussion Ensemble” (piano, percussions and bass clarinet) and released the album “Çeşitlemeler / Variations” (ADA Müzik) in 1999, which took her to international festivals both in Turkey and Europe: Istanbul Music Festival; the 6th Istanbul Jazz Festival; the 6th Eskisehir Festival; Ankara Jazz Festivals; the 1st Afyon Jazz Festival; North Sea Jazz Festival; Traumzeit Festival; Talos Festival; and the 12th Izmir European Jazz Festival. In 2002 she took a stage with Donovan Mixon and Akın Eldes. Since 2004, Tütüncü has played her new compositions within her Trio, each track having been specifically arranged for "two wind instruments and a piano". In the same year the Trio participated in the Bodrum Hadigari Festival and Alanya Jazz Days. In 2005 the Trio recorded “Panayır / Carnivalesque” (EMI / Blue Note) and performed live at the Prague Jazz Open Festival. In order to maintain a delicate balance between notated and improvised music, Tütüncü prefers to live in the midway house. With the Piano Percussion Ensemble, she dances on a tightrope of variations and collages, always allowing space for improvisation. Tütüncü′s new compositions for her Trio interweave written parts and "free zones" even more closely. She also teaches piano at the Akademi Istanbul.
