Sema Poyraz was born in Zonguldak in 1950. She moved to Germany with her family when she finished primary school. After finishing high school, she lived in Oxford for a year. Poyraz studied Eastern Science and Theater and graduated from Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich. She continued her study with Istvan Szabo, Krystof Kieslowski and Agnieska Holland at Cinema-TV Academy in Berlin. From 1974 to 1977, she taught Turkish children and youth who lived in Germany. Poyraz completed her study at Cinema-TV Academy. Since then, she has been working as an actress, film director, and screenwriter.

Poyraz served as a jury member in the International Oberhausen Film Festival. In 2013, she received the "Best Actress" award for her role in the film "Özür Dilerim" at the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival.
